چکیده

We conducted statistical analyses and used modeling techniques to develop derailment probabilities for freight trains and freight cars operating on North American railroads. Knowing the expected frequency of derailment and the conditional probabilities of derailment for individual cars enables estimation of the derailment risk as it is affected by train length, operating speed, and positioning of cars in the consist. These results can be used to quantify the benefit in terms of reduced accident probability and severity of various changes in railroad operating and safety practices.

Modelling the longitudinal dynamics of long freight trains during the braking phase

The common use of UIC Pneumatic braking plant in long freight trains may involve time delays in the application of the braking forces along the convoy. This variable braking action along the train may cause heavy longitudinal efforts that could lead to wagons damaging and even cause train derailment. Simulations of these phenomena are very important both for safety and economic reasons since lo...

Analysis of U.S. freight-train derailment severity using zero-truncated negative binomial regression and quantile regression.

Derailments are the most common type of freight-train accidents in the United States. Derailments cause damage to infrastructure and rolling stock, disrupt services, and may cause casualties and harm the environment. Accordingly, derailment analysis and prevention has long been a high priority in the rail industry and government. Despite the low probability of a train derailment, the potential ...

Quantitative prediction of the risk of heavy haul freight train derailments due to collisions at level crossings

The current methodology for prioritizing level crossing (LC) warning system upgrades and elimination in the United States (U.S.) focuses on the likelihood of collisions between highway and rail vehicles as well as highway user fatalities. However, these metrics do not encompass all LC risks. In particular, they do not consider the risk of derailment that LCs pose to trains, crews, and cargo (es...

Concurrent Locomotive Assignment and Freight Train Scheduling

The locomotive assignment and the freight train scheduling are important problems in railway transportation. Freight cars are coupled to form a freight rake. The freight rake becomes a train when a locomotive is coupled to it. The locomotive assignment problem assigns locomotives to a set of freight rakes in a way that, with minimum locomotive deadheading time, rake coupling delay and locomotiv...

Causal Analysis of Passenger Train Accidents on Freight Rail Corridors

A number of economic, technical and political factors have limited the development of new, dedicated, very-high-speed rail systems in North America. Consequently, most, near-term development of improved or expanded passenger rail service in the U.S. will involve use of existing railroad infrastructure or rights of way. Comprehensive understanding of train accidents on shared-use corridors is cr...
